UAE Government Warns Against AI-Powered Phishing and Deepfake Cyber Threats

The UAE Government Empowerment Department has warned residents about a growing wave of AI-powered phishing and deepfake cyber threats. However, these attacks also use social-engineering tactics to deceive the victim. Moreover, attackers are increasingly impersonating official authorities using urgency and pushing people to reveal sensitive information such as banking details and social security numbers.

According to the Department, the strongest defense is understanding early warning signs of cyber fraud. Moreover, it outlined six red flags, which are divided into three for detecting fraudulent calls and three for spotting deep fake manipulation.

How to Identify Fraudulent Calls

The department has shared three tips to help the public avoid falling into the phone-based scams:

  • Unexpected calls: If a call comes out of nowhere, hang up and verify using the official contact number.
  • Urgency tactics: Fraudsters often create pressure or fear to force quick decisions.
  • Never share personal information: Sensitive details like bank accounts or ID numbers should never be disclosed over the phone.

Understanding Deepfake Threats

It is an AI-generated video or call created to mimic real people. However, cybercriminals use this technology to impersonate employees, spread misinformation, and conduct fraud. Fortunately, the department has shared the following signs to prevent falling into these scams:

  • Look for poor lip-syncing, unnatural eye movements, or odd facial expressions.
  • Always verify the source before complying with any request.
  • Stay updated about evolving AI threats and remain cautious.

The Risk of AI Photo Apps

Nowadays, there is a trend to make new photos using AI tools to transform personal photos into cartoons and avatars.. However, the department has warned against using these apps. This is because you might give your biometric details that can be exploited to create fake accounts and deepfake videos. Moreover, the officials have shared the following tips:

  •  Delete unnecessary AI apps and uploaded photos.
  • Restrict app permissions to limit data access.
  • Educate family members about potential cyber risks.

These tips are going to help you from such scams.

Building Strong Cyber Defenses against  AI-Powered Phishing and Deepfake Cyber Threats

The department has also stressed that multi-factor authentication, strong passwords, and regular software updates are important to secure personal details. Moreover, residents should also report fraudulent calls and emails immediately. In addition, the UAE residents can stay the strongest link in the cybersecurity chain by staying alert and understanding the signs of AI-driven cyber fraud.
