Etihad Airways has expanded its presence in Southeast Asia with the launch of new direct flights to Medan, Indonesia, and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Hence, it has become the only airline directly connecting the GCC to both destinations. So, this move marks a strong milestone in the rapid network expansion of the national carrier.
The inaugural flight to Medan has already landed on October 3. Moreover, the first flight to Phnom Penh on October 3 — both flights are fully booked. However, it highlights the strong demand between the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Now, Etihad serves 83 global destinations with these additions. Hence, it connects Abu Dhabi to more parts of the world than ever before.
Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves said that the new routes show the mission of the airline to link culture and economies. He said, “We are proud to expand our network in Southeast Asia, which creates new links for tourism, trade, and cultural exchange. Both Sumatra and Phnom Penh are extraordinary destinations, offering travellers a chance to explore unique culture and landscape”.
New Gateway to North Sumatra
Etihad’s entry into Medan opens a new door to North Sumatra. However, it is a region famous for Lake Toba, the world’s largest volcanic lake, and a UNESCO Global Geopark. Moreover, the lush rainforest and endangered orangutans of Gunung Leuser National Park also make the area one of the most biodiverse destinations in Indonesia.
Besides tourism, Medan is a fast-growing trade hub because it serves as a gateway between Indonesia, the Middle East, and Africa. So, this development is expected to boost commerce and investment across regions.
Etihad’s First Route to Cambodia
The launch of flights to Phnom Penh is the first entry of Etihad into Cambodia, which further expanding the connectivity between the UAE and Southeast Asia. In addition, the airline will operate four weekly flights. However, they are scheduled to increase to six by November 2025.
Phnom Penh blends historic landmarks like the Royal Palace with a vibrant cultural scene. In addition, the area serves as the gateway to Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, which is the most iconic heritage site in Asia.
Premium Comfort With Airbus A321LR

The new routes will be served by the Airbus A321LR. It will feature three cabin classes and the airline’s first-ever narrowbody First Suites, including private spaces with sliding doors, flat beds, and personalised service.
Etihad Airways Expanding Horizons
The airline has introduced 9 new routes this year. Plus, 21 more planned, including Krabi, Hanoi, Hong Kong, and Zanzibar, in 2026. Hence, Etihad is positioning Abu Dhabi as a global travel hub.
