Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Sweep Across the UAE Weather

Heavy to moderate rainfall swept across many parts of the  United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday, as the unstable UAE weather pattern continues to dominate the region. Moreover, residents experienced cloudy skies, gusty winds, and scattered showers throughout the day. Plus, meteorologists predict more rainfall in the coming days.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM),  a surface low-pressure system interacting with an upper-air trough is the reason behind this condition. Hence, these reasons are creating ideal conditions for rainfall and thundercloud formation.

UAE Weather Forecast: More Showers Expected

The forecast of the NCM for the coming days predicts fair to partly cloudy skies, with the convective cloud likely to form over the northern, eastern, and some internal and southern regions, including offshore islands. Plus, these clouds have the ability to produce scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

Meteorological readings taken on Sunday showed significant thunderstorm activity, especially over central and western regions. Plus, the NCM expects similar conditions to persist early this week. So, it urged residents to stay alert for the weather advisories.

 Strong Winds and Dust Warnings

Winds are expected to stay light to moderate. However, they could occasionally strengthen near thunderstorms. So, these bursts of wind might become fresh to strong, which could cause dust and sand. However, such conditions could lead to decreased visibility in open areas. The NCM also warned that downdraft winds connected to thunderstorms could result in flying debris. So, it could pose serious risks to pedestrians and drivers in the region.

 Public Safety Advisory from NCM

The NCM has issued a safety advisory to urge residents like you to perform the following things in these unstable conditions:

  • Exercise caution during heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
  • Avoid valleys and low-lying areas prone to flash floods.
  • Stay indoors and away from open or elevated areas during lightning activity.
  • Rely solely on official weather updates and avoid sharing unverified information or rumours about weather conditions.

The authority has highlighted the importance of following the safety guidelines, especially for those who are travelling between emirates or going to mountainous and desert regions.

Drivers in Ras Al Khaimah Urged to Stay Vigilant

The local police department issued an urgent alert for motorists as the heavy rainfall hit Ras Al Khaimah. In addition, authorities reported moderate to heavy rainfall in several regions, like Al Shuhada Road, Al Ghayl, and Adhen, where water accumulation and slippery surfaces have made driving hazardous. However, the following are the top tips for drivers in these regions:

  • Reduce speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
  • Avoid flooded roads or valleys where water levels can rise rapidly.
  • Use headlights and avoid sudden lane changes in low-visibility zones.
  • Stay updated through official RAK Police and NCM social media accounts for traffic and weather updates.

Authorities on High Alert

Emergency response teams and municipal authorities across the  United Arab Emirates (UAE) are on standby to manage water drainage, monitor flooded areas, and ensure road safety. Plus, public transport and aviation services are normally operating throughout the country. However, a slight delay might happen based on the weather intensity.

Expert insights

Weather experts that such unstable weather patterns are common during seasonal transition, as cooler air masses interact with the warmer surface atmosphere. However, this can lead to sudden rainstorms, thunderclouds, and fluctuating temperatures across the country.

Key takeaways

The authorities request residents stay alert, follow the official updates from the NCM, and prioritize safety on the roads, as the  United Arab Emirates (UAE) is seeing the continued unstable weather and thunderstorms. Moreover, more rain and thunderclouds are expected in the coming days, especially in the northern and central regions.
