New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner delivered one of the most memorable lower-order innings in recent T20I history in a gripping T20I at Eden Park, Auckland. He became unbeaten with an unbeaten 55 off 28 balls. Despite his brilliant performances, the West Indies clinched a 7-run win to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

The interesting clash was watched closely by cricket fans across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and beyond. However, it showcased nerve of steel, late fireworks, and a disciplined West Indies bowling performance in crunch moments.

Mitchell Santner’s Record-Setting Knock Goes in Vain

New Zealand found themselves in deep trouble at 108/9 while chasing 165 in the first West Indies vs New Zealand T20I, as the top order collapsed against a fiery West Indies attack. However, Santner came in at No. 8 to deliver the following counterattack.

  • 55 off 28 balls*
  • 8 fours and 2 sixes
  • Strike rate: 196.43

Moreover, he smashed  Matthew Forde for 23 runs in the 18th over and followed up with 13 runs off Jason Holder in the 19th. Therefore, he brought the host within touching distance. Santner kept fighting in the last over, as he needed 20 runs to help his team clinch the game. However, the West Indies composed themselves to restrict New Zealand to 157/9.

This brilliant knock helped Santner to make the following records:

  • Second captain ever in T20I history to score 50+ batting at No. 8 or lower
  • Featuring in the list of the highest T20I scores at No. 8 or below among full-member nations

Hope, Chase, Powell Lift West Indies to Competitive Total

Earlier, the West Indies put up 164/6 on a tricky two-paced wicket after winning the toss. Below is the list of top contributors to this excellent total:

  • Shai Hope: 53 off 39 (4 fours, 3 sixes) – led from the front
  • Roston Chase: 28 off 27 – steady middle-order support
  • Rovman Powell: 33 off 23 – late hitting boost

On the other side, the bowlers of New Zealand kept things tight. However,  Jacob Duffy (2/19) and Zakary Foulkes (2/35) made an early breakthrough and bowled smartly at the death.

Chase & Seales Break NZ Backbone

New Zealand started their innings confidently as the target was not too big. However,  Jayden Seales (3/32) and Roston Chase (3/26) triggered a dramatic collapse. Therefore, the team collapsed badly from 48/1 to 107/9, which ultimately cost them their game.

Indeed, Mitchell Santner fought till last of the inning. However, West Indies bowlers Romario Shepherd and Chase held their nerve in the final over to seal victory.

  • West Indies 164/6 (20 overs)
  • New Zealand 157/9 (20 overs)
  • West Indies won by 7 runs

Why This Matters for UAE Cricket Fans

Many players from New Zealand and the West Indies participate actively in the UAE Domestic cricket, like ILT20, and Global T20I league. Hence, the game offers a taste of elite international cricket under pressure, which is a style that the UAE fans enjoyed.

The knock of Santner in particular is a reminder of how lower-order batters are reshaping the world of T20 cricket. However, it is something seen frequently in the T20I league throughout the world.
