The school bags are in the corner, the alarm clocks are off, and the kids are already asking: “What are we doing today?”

The October mid-term break has arrived. Several Dubai private schools have their break from 12 to 16 October, and with the weekends on either side, that’s effectively nine days off, from 10 to 18 October, with classes resuming on Monday, 19 October. Not every school follows the same calendar, so double-check yours.

The good news is that the timing couldn’t be better. The weather is finally cooling, and Dubai’s big outdoor attractions are reopening one after another this very week. Here are 12 ideas for the break, from big-ticket days out to completely free ones.

Quick answer: This week, Dubai Miracle Garden has just reopened (from AED 70 for residents), Dubai Safari Park reopens on 12 October, and Global Village opens on 14 October. For free days, try Kite Beach, Al Qudra Lakes or the Mohammed bin Rashid Library. For something different, take the kids on the new Etihad Rail train to Fujairah or Abu Dhabi.

How to plan nine days: pick two or three “big” days (one paid attraction each), fill the rest with free outings, and leave at least one day completely open. Spreading costs this way keeps the excitement going all week without one expensive weekend eating the whole budget.

1. Dubai Miracle Garden (Just Reopened)

Dubai Miracle Garden opened its 15th season on 8 October, and it’s the perfect first stop of the break. Expect more than 200 million flowers, over 50 displays, and for the first time, a new theme every week, starting with Pink October, UN Day, UAE Flag Day and Diwali.

AdultsAED 70AED 100
Children (3 to 12)AED 50AED 80

Prices are listed before VAT. The garden is open from 9 am to 9 pm on weekdays and until 11 pm at weekends, and the season runs until 31 May 2027. Birthday tip: UAE residents with a birthday between October and May can register on the official website for two free tickets. Bring a valid Emirates ID to get resident prices.

Best time to go: late afternoon, so you can see the flowers in daylight and the lights after sunset.

2. Dubai Butterfly Garden

Right next to the Miracle Garden, the Butterfly Garden is a hit with younger children, who love having butterflies land on their hands. If you’re visiting both, the AED 140 combo ticket saves you a second queue.

3. Dubai Safari Park (Reopens 12 October)

Dubai Safari Park opens its eighth season on Monday, 12 October, right in the middle of the break. It’s a great full-day outing, with animals from Africa, Asia and Arabia, safari tours and shows. Check the official Dubai Safari Park channels for this season’s ticket prices and new attractions before you go, and arrive early, as opening week will be busy.

The park is large and mostly outdoors, so wear comfortable shoes and bring hats, water and a light snack. Younger children may get tired walking between zones, so a stroller or a plan for regular rest stops makes the day far more enjoyable. Mornings are cooler and the animals tend to be more active, which makes them the best time to visit.

4. Global Village (Opens 14 October)

Global Village opens for Season 31 on Wednesday, 14 October, at 6 pm. It’s the classic Dubai winter evening: food from around the world, rides, shows and shopping. Opening week will be crowded, so if you go during the break, arrive early. Our Global Village Season 31 guide has timings, ticket prices, family days and tips.

5. The Green Planet’s 10th Birthday

Dubai’s indoor rainforest is turning 10, and it’s celebrating until 11 October with games, African drummers, mascots, kids’ activities and new animals, including meerkats, hyacinth macaws and toucans. It’s indoors and air-conditioned, so it’s ideal for younger children. Go this weekend before the celebrations end.

6. Take the Train to Fujairah or Abu Dhabi

Here’s a new one for 2026. Kids who’ve never been on a train will love the Etihad Rail. From Dubai’s Al Yalayis Station (reachable by Metro Red Line), you can reach Fujairah in about 1 hour 10 minutes or Abu Dhabi in about an hour, with fares starting from around AED 29 to AED 39. Children’s tickets have been offered at a discount.

Make a day of it: mountains and beaches in Fujairah, or museums and the Corniche in Abu Dhabi. With only a few trains a day, book ahead and check the return times. Our Etihad Rail guide explains timings, stations and the rules on board.

7. Abu Dhabi Festival

The Abu Dhabi Festival starts on 10 October and runs until 19 December, with music, performances and cultural events across the capital. If you’re taking the train to Abu Dhabi, check the festival programme for family-friendly shows that fit your day.

8. Liwa International Festival

For something completely different, head into the desert. The Liwa International Festival runs throughout October in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, with desert sports and family entertainment against the backdrop of some of the world’s highest sand dunes. It’s a long drive, so it works best as an overnight trip.

9. A Free Beach Day

October is when UAE beaches become pleasant again. Kite Beach in Dubai is free, with soft sand, a running track, play areas and plenty of cafes and food trucks. Go in the late afternoon for the sunset over the Burj Al Arab. Pack snacks, water and sun cream, as the midday sun is still strong.

10. Al Qudra Lakes Picnic

Just outside the city, Al Qudra Lakes is a free escape into the desert, with lakes, birds and wide open space. Bring a picnic, binoculars and bikes if you have them. It’s especially magical at sunset. There are limited facilities, so take everything you need, including rubbish bags to take your waste home.

11. Mohammed bin Rashid Library

Rainy-day plan, or just a calm morning? The Mohammed bin Rashid Library at Al Jaddaf has a dedicated children’s section, beautiful reading spaces and stunning views over Dubai Creek. Entry is free, making it one of the best-value outings in the city.

12. Dubai Comedy Festival (For the Grown-Ups)

Parents need a break too. The Dubai Comedy Festival runs from 9 to 18 October, perfectly overlapping the holiday. Book a babysitter or swap evenings with friends and catch a show. Check the festival line-up for age ratings before booking.

Bonus: Indoor Ideas for Hot Afternoons

October afternoons can still be warm, so it helps to have a few indoor plans ready. Dubai’s big malls are more than shopping: the Dubai Mall has an ice rink and an aquarium, and KidZania lets children role-play real jobs in a mini city. Many malls also run free holiday activities and workshops during school breaks, so check their social media pages before you go.

If you’d rather stay home, turn one day into a family project: bake something together, set up a board game tournament, or plan a “UAE bucket list” of places to visit over the winter. Simple days at home often become the kids’ favourite memories.

Staying Safe on Outdoor Days

  • Hydrate constantly. Carry more water than you think you’ll need, especially at the beach and in the desert.
  • Use sun protection. Hats, sunglasses and sun cream are still essential in October.
  • Agree a meeting point at busy places like Global Village and Miracle Garden, in case anyone gets separated.
  • Put your phone number in younger children’s pockets or on a wristband.
  • Respect the desert. At Al Qudra, stay on marked tracks, keep a safe distance from wildlife and take all rubbish home.

Planning Your Budget

Here’s a rough plan for a family of four (two adults, two children aged 3 to 12) using resident prices where available:

DayPlanApproximate cost (AED)
Day 1Miracle Garden + Butterfly GardenFrom 280 for combo tickets, plus snacks
Day 2Kite Beach and a picnicFree, plus food
Day 3Train to Fujairah and backAbout 175 to 235 in return fares (with child discounts)
Day 4Global Village eveningAbout 100 entry, plus food and rides
Day 5Mohammed bin Rashid LibraryFree

Mixing paid attractions with free days keeps the break exciting without stretching the family budget.

Smart Tips for the Break

  1. Carry your Emirates ID. Many attractions offer resident discounts, but only if you show a valid ID.
  2. Book online. It’s usually quicker and sometimes cheaper than paying at the gate.
  3. Go early or late. Midday is still hot in October, and attractions are busiest in the afternoon.
  4. Avoid opening-day crowds at Global Village and Safari Park if you can. A few days later is much calmer.
  5. Check flights before travelling. If you’re flying during the break, some regional routes have seen cancellations and delays this week, so check your airline’s latest status before heading to the airport.
  6. Keep one lazy day. Kids (and parents) recharge better with at least one day of doing nothing at all.

Final Word: Make the Most of the Cooler Days

The October break is the first real taste of the UAE’s outdoor season. Mix a big day out with a few free adventures, try the train for the first time, and save one evening for Global Village. The kids will go back to school with plenty of stories, and you won’t need another holiday to recover from this one.
